Abstract

A study on the microstructure of AISI 420 stainless steel after hardening heat treatment is discussed. Characterization techniques such as light microscopy and scanning electronic microscopy shows that the presence of chromium carbides and his distribution aligned at the martensitic structure affect the microstructure, producing fragility. Chemical composition analysis and fracture mechanics to complementing the results suggest possible solutions to these undesirable effects.
