This study investigates the relationship between rock fragmentation and swell, a critical phenomenon in mining and construction that impacts efficiency and operational costs. Two types of local rock (sandstone and diorite) were evaluated through controlled fragmentation tests in the laboratory. The fragmented samples were granulometrically classified, and their bulk densities calculated. Results indicate that swell does not vary significantly with coarse fragments but increases with finer fragments, peaking at very fine granulometries before decreasing notably. Additionally, the shape and distribution of fragments influence swell. This study contributes to the understanding of swell and its prediction based on the granulometry of fragmented materials.
