Abstract

This article proposes a solution to the public health problem associated with patients in palliative care, who are cared for by caregivers in their homes. Our objective was to develop an accessible and acceptable telemedicine application for users. The methodology used was divided into 4 phases: 1) Identification of the patients’ requirements for caregivers in palliative care, 2) application and hardware development, 3) application validation and adjustments, and 4) application implementation and evaluation. As a result, in the first phase, it was defined the essential sensor for palliative care and training topics for the caregiver, as well. In the second phase, an application was created allowing remote monitoring of the patient. In the third phase of application validation and adjustments, there were some software and hardware aspects. In the fourth phase, the application was implemented in the city of Piura for a period of 30 days. As conclusions, the functionalities recommended for an application of this type were identified as the record of pain scale, record of symptoms, record of functionalities, followup of treatment and report of the evolution of bedsores. There are very few telemedicine studies for palliative care. This development collaborates with the scientific community showing an implementation for a developing country, where there is little health personnel trained in this specialty and public health budgets are limited as well.
