It is addressed a study on the mechanical strength of materials used in the manufacture of hanging bridges applied in the Andean regions. One of them is the grass of the Andean regions called Ichu (Stipa Ichu). The other is a manufactured fiber for commercial use. There were performed traction tests on both fibers to calculate the breaking strength and mechanical strength. The results are shown in different conditions: dry fibers and fibers soaked with water, in order to correlate the mechanical resistance with the moisture that is able to contain the materials in working conditions.
