Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine the most appropriate physicochemical technology for removing pollutants from industrial effluents of bixin and carmine dyes, and thus achieve values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) lower than the Maximum Permissible Values (VMA) DS 021-2009 regulated by the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation of Peru. Among the advanced oxidation technologies applied, the best results were obtained with Fenton, photo-Fenton and Activated thermal Fenton. The research was conducted in the laboratories of Tecsup. Chemical analyses were confirmed by an accredited laboratory. It was determined that the activated thermal Fenton is the most efficient treatment technology reaching the objective by the S.D. 021- 2009 ofthe Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation. Importantly, treatment of these effluents is complex because organic their molecules nave conjugated double bonds in bixin and aromatic rings in carminic acid molecule.
